A bit of chip

This light microscopic image depicts the circuits of a computer chips using oblique illumination. In the beginning of the 1980s several hundreds of thousands transistors could be placed on one chip reducing the costs of computers massively. Nowadays the central processing unit (CPU) of a desktop computer contains several billions (1.000.000.000.000) of transistors allowing around 50 millions of instructions per second.
